China isn’t just a market; it is a universe of its own.
With nearly 18% of the world’s population and a rapidly evolving consumer landscape that often leads global trends in retail and digital innovation, understanding the Chinese consumer is critical for global brands.
However, for researchers, running online projects in China can be challenging. You might design the perfect study, only to find that your tools are blocked, your push notifications are not delivered, and your participants’ video uploads hit the “Great Firewall” and freeze.
At Field Notes, we don’t just cover this region – China is actually our third largest market (after the US and UK) in terms of projects run. Here is how we navigate the digital complexities of mainland China to ensure your project runs as smoothly in Shanghai as it does in San Francisco.
1. Speaking The Same Language
Our app is fully optimised for Mandarin, ensuring a native and intuitive experience for participants. We understand that if the interface feels “foreign” or clunky, engagement drops. We treat Mandarin speakers as a primary user group, not an afterthought.
2. Overcoming the “App Store” Block
The biggest hurdle in China is the absence of the Google Play Store. If your research app relies on Google services to be downloaded or updated, your participants in Beijing simply can’t access it.
We solve this with a direct Android .apk download. Participants can download the Field Notes app directly from our website. This ensures that recruitment and onboarding are frictionless, regardless of the device the participant is using.
3. Servers Where They Matter
Speed is about proximity. If your participant is uploading a video from Shenzhen to a server in Virginia, latency will compromise the experience.
As detailed in our global infrastructure map, we utilise 10+ servers worldwide, with specific coverage in the region. Our app automatically selects the best server based on network distance, ensuring that Chinese participants connect to a regional hub rather than struggling to push data halfway across the world.
4. Adjusting Encryption for Speed
High-level encryption is standard for us, but the specific nature of China’s internet infrastructure can sometimes flag or throttle heavily encrypted data streams.
To combat this, we offer flexible encryption settings. We can decrease encryption levels (at the participant or project level) to facilitate smoother uploads. This technical flexibility ensures that files arrive intact and maintain the integrity of your project.
5. Notifications That Actually Arrive
We sometimes take push notifications for granted. In China, standard Android push services (which rely on Google) are often blocked.
We have developed China-specific settings that allow us to deliver push notifications reliably in mainland China. This means when you send a prompt asking a participant to record their morning coffee routine or review a product, they actually receive it on time.
We have successfully run projects connecting with thousands of participants across 40+ markets, but our track record in China is one of our proudest technical achievements.
Don’t let the “Great Firewall” blind you to the insights of 1.4 billion people. Check out our China-specific participant page to see how easily the participants can join our projects.
