Recruiting top talent is competitive, especially in the legal sector. For over five years, global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer (HSF Kramer) has partnered with Field Notes to power their annual Campus Ambassador Programme.
The goal? To move beyond static email updates and build a vibrant, interactive community that bridges the gap between the firm and students on university campuses.
Here is how HSF Kramer uses our platform to engage, understand, and mobilise the next generation of legal professionals.
The Challenge: Building a Remote Community
Managing a network of student ambassadors across different universities can be logistically challenging. HSF Kramer needed a central hub to not only communicate with these ambassadors but to empower them to act as extensions of their brand.
They needed a tool that was more than just a data collection app – they needed a space for “connecting aspiring law professionals” to the firm and to each other.
The Solution: A Branded, Interactive Hub
Using Field Notes, HSF Kramer created a dedicated digital environment that feels less like a corporate portal and more like an exclusive community.
1. Fully Customisable Branding
First impressions matter. The HSF Kramer team utilises our fully customisable app settings to skin the platform with their specific branding, logos, and colour palette. When ambassadors log in, they aren’t entering a generic research tool; they are stepping into an HSF Kramer-branded environment. This visual consistency reinforces their sense of belonging to the firm from day one.
2. Insight & Advocacy in One Place
The programme uses the platform for a dual purpose: gathering insight and driving advocacy.
- “Day in the Life” Insight: Ambassadors are assigned tasks to upload multiple media formats – videos, photos, and text – documenting how they engage with the firm, including through attending exclusive events like Open Days, or hosting campus information sessions as part of their ambassador role. These authentic pieces of UGC provide prospective applicants with a flavour of what HSF Kramer’s events look like from behind the scenes.
- Driving Action: The platform is used to mobilise ambassadors. Through specific tasks, HSF Kramer asks them to share content on their own social media channels and promote HSF firm opportunities and events to their peers.
3. Direct Communication via Messaging
To keep the momentum going, HSF Kramer utilises our in-app messaging tool. This allows the graduate recruitment Early Careers team to communicate directly with ambassadors – to answer questions, offer encouragement and feedback, or provide details on upcoming events. It transforms the remote approach into a supported, two-way relationship.
4. Centralised Management
For the HSF Kramer Early Careers team, managing the digital output of a large cohort of students over five years requires efficiency. The secure admin portal centralises the management of the entire programme. From assigning tasks to tracking engagement and downloading content for internal use, everything is handled in one secure dashboard, removing the need for scattered spreadsheets and email chains.
The Impact
By using Field Notes as a central engagement hub, Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer has sustained a successful, long-running ambassador programme that delivers real value. They have created a consistent digital home where aspiring lawyers feel connected, heard, and empowered to represent the firm to their peers.
